Spinal Cord Stimulation

A spinal cord stimulator is a device used to help relieve pain caused by damage to the nervous system using low-level electrical impulses. The spinal cord stimulation device is implanted underneath the skin into the epidural space of the spine, which surrounds the spinal cord. This device is used to replace pain signals with different feelings, such as a gentle massaging feeling or complete absence of the pain. A physician will place a trial device using x-ray guidance in a procedure suite. The spinal cord simulator trial is performed using monitored conscious sedation. This trial device will remain implanted in the patient for 3-4 days. The patient will then return to the treating physician for removal to determine if neurostimulation is right for them. Please note that not every patient is a candidate for this treatment. If permanent implantation is elected for patient, the patient will then be referred to a surgeon for permanent implantation. Your physician may recommend spinal cord stimulation if you are not able to control your pain using more conservative therapies, including physical therapy, interventional pain management, oral pain medications or intolerance of oral pain medications.
